This chip-enhancement technology (actually, a set of 57
instructions designed to enhance multimedia performance)
has become standard on the Pentium II and its
competitors, but the apps that take full advantage of
MMX capabilities are, so far, few and far between, while
graphics technology has galloped past it. MMX has been
challenged by AMD's 3D Now! technology, and superseded
on the cutting edge by Intel's Katmai/KNI instruction
set, formerly known as MMX2 and the centerpiece of the
Pentium III chip. And of course, new 3D technology,
first appearing in DirectX 6.0, is coming our way as
well, which will probably render MMX (and possibly 3D
Now!) totally obsolete. So much for the cutting edge.
Why even keep this page posted here? Well, you
were curious, weren't you?
