E-Mail Clients and Add-Ons

1on1 Lite is a free utility that tracks your e-mail messages through their various stops across the Internet, and reports if anyone but you reads them. Also comes with a strong encryption feature and an "auto-shredder." Who's paranoid? Sneak over to www.1on1mail.com/ and see for yourself. (The site is currently down; check the shareware sites for the program.)

1st Email Anti-Virus 3.0 protects you from a variety of e-mail threats, including iframe, MIME header, CLSID extension and script attacks. It is compatible with any POP3 e-mail client, such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape and Eudora. $29 from www.zzee.com/enh/.

It features user profiles, mail filtering, message preview, reply, print and other options. This Lite version allows to check one account only; using more accounts is possible but requires a registration fee. Free from www.lockbyte.com/.

32bit e-mail Broadcaster e9.50.01 is useful for e-mailing your own created messages to a list of e-mail addresses. You can send e-mail newsletters, client notifications, advertising and more. $59 from www.electrasoft.com/.

Accessing the Internet by E-Mail 2.4 is a free "executable manual" that tells how you can surf the Web using a standalone e-mail client. Too wonky to be true? See for yourself at www.geocities.com/emai24/.

aCrypt+ lets you send securely encrypted attachments as self-extracting executable files. The recipient does not need aCrypt to decode the message. Free from www.acrypt.com/.

Anti-spam Mail Checker 1.20 BETA does more than just kill spam. $9 from ecsoftware.topcities.com/asmc.htm.

ASS Maker 3.1 may have a questionable name, but it's a legitimate utility that keeps Web site owners from having their e-mail address scarfed by spammers. ASS Maker writes a JavaScript for you that can be copied and pasted into your code in the place of 'mailto' tags, disguising the tags and your address with several JavaScript parameters. When a visitor clicks the mailto link, the script launches the visitor's default e-mail program with your original address in the 'To' field, but the spammer bots and spiders can't see it. Clever, huh? By the way, ASS stands for "Anti-Spam Script." Free from assmaker.mybravenet.com/.

No longer supported by the vendor, but available from www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,5402,tk,hsx,00.asp.

Calypso 3.10.03 is a powerful e-mail program that some people like more than the ubiquitous Eudora. Its main "flaw" is that it will lobotomize itself after the 30-day trial period, so register it or be left with a very "lite" version. Get it from www.mcsdallas.com.

ChoiceMail Spam Fighter 1.4 works with any POP3 e-mail client to keep the evil spam away. $40 from www.digiportal.com/product4.html.

Drag, Compress and Email 1.0 offers another way to send files by e-mail and helps you save time and costs. The files are compressed before sending, decreasing the send and receive time and the amount of Internet bandwidth and disk space required. $15 from www.bettereasier.com/.

E.Box 1.0(01) filters unsolicited e-mail messages right from the server. Also serves as an e-mail client, so you can reply, forward and compose messages. $25 to keep from jpsoft.dk/eboxinfo.html.

ECleaner 2.02 is a freeware utility designed to clean up e-mail messages filled with superfluous characters such as brackets, etc. Copy the message, run eCleaner, and it strips all the garbage from the message, leaving clean text that can be pasted into another message box for resending. Find out more from ronbrandon.com/lukeminnie/email_cleaner.htm (the utility is no longer supported by the vendor, so you might do better to download it from www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6492,tk,hsx,00.asp).

EMail Address Pro 3.0.1, is a $50 utility from www.a1soft.com/emext.htm that organizes your e-mail addresses and compiles mailing lists. This one strikes me as a bit pricey, but it's worth a look.

Email2Pop 3.1, formerly AOL2Pop, lets AOL and GMail users view their mailbox through an e-mail program of their choice. You can view mail from all your AOL screen names without logging off or switching, or check AOL and other e-mail addresses through the same interface. $24 from www.email2pop.com/.

Also allows you to add e-mail notification to any script or macro you've written. Free (requires the VB6 runtime files) from www.karenware.com/powertools/ptmailer2.asp.

EMailFerret is a simple utility that hunts up a given e-mail address for you. Just provide the person's name and watch the ferret root out the address. No longer supported by FerretSoft, but still available on many shareware sites.

Hotbar 4.0 purports to be an add-on to your Outlook client. It's not. It's spyware, and a particularly insidious example of such. You can go to www.hotbar.com/ and try it if you like, but be warned: even visiting the site can be dangerous to your computer. The site tried to hijack my browser as soon as I visited it. NOT recommended!

HyperSend isn't a download, it's a free Web-based secure file sending utility. If you need to ensure a file gets from you to your recipient without being intercepted, check out www.hypersend.com/.

Good for people who want to use e-mail but don't need to hook up with an ISP. Check it out at www.juno.com/. Drawbacks? You get ads with every mailing, and you can't send file attachments - text only. Juno is now offering free access to the Internet through its proprietory network. They claim that they'll eventually surpass America Online in content and ease of use. They even offer JIM, an instant messaging utility that works with AIM and other clients. Juno is also a full-fledged ISP and operates in conjunction with NetZero. Note: I have it on excellent authority that Juno is a truly hellish ISP, and does horrendous things to your computer. How to tell besides opening them and scanning through them for useful content? This program might fill that little niche, by scanning all incoming e-mail for your specified keywords and alert you if it finds mention of any. Worth a look from www.softwareutilities.com/pkwindex.html.

Microsoft Outlook Express is probably the most popular of free e-mail clients. It comes bundled with Internet Explorer, so to get it, you'll need to download and install IE assuming you don't already have it. Find out more at www.microsoft.com/windows/oe/. Personally, I don't recommend either Outlook (the more powerful version: home page is www.microsoft.com/office/outlook/default.asp) or Outlook Express because of the tremendous amount of security flaws in the two. If you do use either version, make sure to keep up with the security patches.
