BareGrep is a tool for searching files in Windows. Similar to the Unix grep tool in that the search strings are specified with a regular expression, BareGrep performs an incremental search and presents the search results in a tabular format that allows easy navigation and sorting of the results. BatchZip Toolkit 2.03 lets you compress and decompress files for archival purposes with no muss nor fuss. $29 from www.dtrleisure.com/.

BCWipe 3.03 proves that there's deleting files, and then there's deleting files. When you delete with this utility (free for noncommercial users), it wipes the file out permanently, even scrubbing the section of hard drive that the file used to reside on to ensure that not a trace remains. Interested in working with archived files like .CAB and .ZIP files? To find information within these kind of files, it's easiest to turn the task over to a shareware program, BigSpeed Zipper from www.bigspeedsoft.com/. It's a basic compression program that will cost you $29, but its "Locator" function hunts nicely through .ZIP files.

The Brain is a unique organizational tool that allows you to reorganize your data in an intuitive, very non-Explorer fashion. Clean Disk Security 6.3 gives you secure file deletion; deleted files cannot be undeleted. CleanReg 3.7 is like many other housecleaning tools that are used to remove invalid file references from the Windows Registry. But unlike many other Registry utilities, this is aimed at advanced users who know exactly what they want and don't want hanging around. CloneMaster 2.19 searches for true duplicate files (byte for byte), same-name files, and zero-length files and brings them to your attention, identifying duplicates based on name, byte size, data, and so on. The Smart Delete function lets you choose to ignore folders that aren't currently open, and you can flag for deletion only the duplicate files that are the oldest or the newest. ListXP 0.88 is a file viewer for Windows that works with any file that you access and displays the data exactly as it was stored on the disk. Advanced features include Boolean expression searches and tailing (for when a file has new data appended to it). Built-in parsers support ASCII text, untranslated binary, Unicode text, and mIRC log file display, and formatting such as colors, bold, and underline. Very similar to the old DOS LIST program. ListZapper 1.0 is a little utility that clears Windows' MRU (most recently used) lists. These lists store information about the documents you've most recently accessed. Free from www.pcmag.com/utilities/.

MacVision 0.8.204 is a free, but timed, utility that helps soothe the nerves of Mac users by making the PC desktop look like a Mac's. It times out to make sure that you download the latest beta version (the makers haven't ironed out all of the wrinkles yet). My Own Backup 2.1 is ineptly named, but proves itself in the field. nnCron Lite 1.09 is a small full-featured scheduler (UNIX 'cron' ported to Windows) that can launch applications and open documents at a specified time or at a chosen interval. Uses a text file called CRON.TAB to launch your applications or open documents on your computer. Ideally launched through a .BAT file (often called from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file), nnCron Lite comes with two BAT files (STARTCRON.BAT and STOPCRON.BAT) which can be called to start the program and then stop it once it has carried out its duties. OpenExpert 1.40 allows you to configure every existing filetype with its own "Open With" submenu extension through this Windows Explorer right-click context menu add-on. This is something that should have been part of Windows Explorer all along. Free ($20 for corporate users) from www.baxbex.com/.

OpenWin 1.0 goes farther than the usual Ctrl+Alt+Del method to close problem windows and programs. It's a replacement application that will tell you about the open windows, but the hidden windows, too, along with info on the handle, title caption, and class of an open window. PC Data Finder 5.5 does a good job of searching through your files for specified data. $40 from www.silverlaketech.com/.

PC Inspector File Recovery 3.0 is a data recovery program with support for FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems. It recovers files with the original time and date stamp, and can optionally restore them to a network drive and can recover many files, even when a header entry is no longer available. PC Search Light 1.3 adds a document keyword search facility to any computer with full keyword search. Only searches 5000 documents, has a 3MB file size limitation, and requires MS Word to function. If these limitations don't bother you, download this freebie from www.softpit.com/download.asp.

PentaZip 5.1 is a $50 file archive utility that lets you do what most other file compression utilities do, and supports most formats, including .ZIP, .ARJ, .TAR, .ARC, .CAB, .RAR, etc. Also offers a file viewer. Get a demo version from www.pentazip.com/.

PhileSplitter 2003 4.0 lets you split a file into a number of smaller, more manageable pieces that can be re-assembled back into the original file later. $36 from www.cybersoftcentral.com/products/philesplitter/.

Power Drawers 2000 creates folders and puts files in groups based on functional categories (including Internet, utilities, games, and development tools) that are appropriate for your installed applications. Power File Gold 1.0 is a file manager and Internet Explorer replacement. It copies, moves and deletes files from multiple directories or drives. It includes complete FTP client uploading and downloading from the Internet, creates and opens Zip files and synchronizes files. Power Searcher 2.07 is an advanced file search and print utility that can find files by full or partial name, size, date, attributes, or contents. Free, for now, from www.beatbrowser.co.uk/software/home.html.

PowerArchiver 2000 6.0 is a multifeatured file archive utility that supports most formats and lets you repair corrupted compressed files. Free from www.powerarchiver.com/.

PowerDesk 5.0 is a highly regarded $30 file manager/Windows Explorer-alternative. It combines the best features of Win 3.1's File Manager and Windows Explorer, supports file transfers and compression, interfaces well with Quick View Plus, and has a customizable interface. PowerGrep 1.1.0 searches for keywords within text and binary files to find exactly what you want as well as performing the usual "search and replace" function. PrintFolder 1.2 is a free utility from no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/ that prints your directory structure. This is one of those programs that doesn't do a lot of different things, but does one thing and does it well. Note: the Pro version, 3.0, costs $25.

Professional Renamer 1.10 lets you rename multiple file names at once. $15 from miklsoft.mastak.com/ (look on the major shareware sites if the Russian site confuses you).

PropertiesPlus 1.65 is an add-on to Windows Explorer that gives you detailed info about a drive, folder, or file via a right-click. Free from www.ne.jp/asahi/cool/kish/.

PrnPrint 2.15: Do you have a file with a "PRN" extension and you don't know what to do with it? .PRN is the default file extension for a printer's output that is sent or saved to a file instead of a printer, and this utility lets you print such a file. Quick View Plus 7.0, mentioned elsewhere in this article, is a souped-up version of the Quick View utility included with Explorer (well, some Windows users have it and others don't) that previews files in its own viewer without actually opening them. Slice32 is a freebie from www.pcmag.com/utilities/, an update of a program originally made available in 1989. It allows you to "slice up" large files into smaller pieces for transport, and pieces them back together for use. Nice for those of us who depend on floppy disks to move programs and files back and forth between computers, and find ourselves stymied by the 1.44MB limit of the typical floppy.

Total Commander 5.51 is a file manager that performs the usual copy, move and delete functions that Windows Explorer does, but also lets you use those files in ways that usually take another program (or two). For instance, it allows you to search for duplicate files, rename groups of files with a hot key, and encode files. A packer-and-unpacker feature lets you compress and expand files. WinRAR 3.1 is a $30 file compression utility from www.rarsoft.com/ that compresses files using the .RAR (as opposed to the .ZIP) format, which can reportedly use less storage space than similarly compressed ZIP files.

WinSplit 1.0.8 is a freebie that splits large (even 1 GB) files into smaller chunks that can be sent through e-mail or stored on floppy disks. It also rejoins the split files at its destination. WinTree 2.53 is a file management utility that works similarly to Windows Explorer, but with some capabilities WinEx lacks. Free from lightning.prohosting.com/~louka.

WinZip 8.1 is the shareware standard for zipping and unzipping files. It handles just about every form of file out there, including .CABs, operates more efficiently than its fabled competitor, PKZip, and only costs $29 to keep. The latest version has a configurable toolbar (non-owners of MSIE 4.x might need to download COMCTL32.DLL from NikoMak's or Microsoft's Web sites for this to work), the ability to right-click a file in Explorer and instantly compress and e-mail it, and the Comment feature, which allows you to add or view a description of the archive. ZipInstaller 1.0 allows you to install and uninstall applications that do not provide an internal installation program. It extracts all files from the Zip file, copies them to the destination folder you select, creates (optional) shortcuts in the Start Menu and in your desktop, and adds an uninstall module to allow you to automatically remove the software in the future. ZipMagic 2000 is probably the closest competition to WinZip on the market. It's even easier to use than WinZip (archived files appear as folders within Windows Explorer), but it costs $40 instead of $29 and needs to be momentarily disabled to keep zipped files from acting like folders.
