HTML Editors and Web Page Creation Utilities

htmlThere are plenty of programs on the market for the Web designer who doesn't want to bother with HTML coding; not all of them are expensive, off-the-shelf offerings. Or, for handcoders who want programs to help them out without doing all the grunt work (and creating possibly bloated and erroneous code), there are plenty of other programs that help out while still allowing you to work the code yourself.

!VisToolBox 2.0 combines utilities such as a screen capturer, magnifier, mouse auto-click, color picker, and "DOS prompt here." Useful for graphics designers and Web creators alike. $27 from www.vistoolbox.com/.

_JavaScript Headline 1.0 lets you create JavaScript-based headlines for your site. Rotate and change them around as you like. Free from www.usingit.com/.

_JavaScript Utility Suite 1.0 generates customized JavaScripts for image slideshows, pop-up windows, drop-down menus, and MouseOvers without having to write any code. Enter the variables and push a button to generate the code. Free from dark-street.com/darkstreet/jsutility.html.

0-Code HTML Converter 2.0 converts HTML to most used script languages (PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, JavaScript) as well as convert ASCII text and RTF to HTML. Free from hixus.com/.

123LogAnalyzer 2.20 tells you who your site visitors are, where they come from, where they go and lots more. Not cheap at $130, but you can try it out for free at www.123loganalyzer.com/ and see if it's worth the simoleons.

1st Page 2000 2.0 is a free HTML editor that is touted by at least one expert as able to give HomeSite and HotDog a run for their money (looks a lot like HomeSite, even). Very powerful for a freebie. Four different settings, Easy, Normal, Expert, or Hardcore, lets you adapt this program to your own skill level. Check it out at www.evrsoft.com/1stpage/. Note: I've used this on two machines, and both of them ended up infected with the JS_LOOP.A worm. Not a good thing, and required the program to be uninstalled to remove the worm. I've alerted Evrsoft to the problem, but as I have not received a response (after two months) and have found no mention of the viral infection on their site, I can no longer recommend this program for use.

3DHTML is a toolkit for making three-dimensional effects using DHTML. Not for the faint-hearted, but a cool download, and apparently free from 3dhtml.netzministerium.de/.

Absolute HTML Compressor 1.11 compresses HTML files by removing extraneous tags, shortening expressions, and the like. Free from www.serpik.com/ahc/.

AceHTML 5.0 is a free, powerful HTML editor and Web page creator that works well for both novices and experienced users. Includes templates useful for less experienced users, a frame delineation feature, and snippets of JavaScript and DHTML that can be plugged into your creation with a minimum of fuss. Find out more from freeware.acehtml.com/.

Actual Search & Replace 2.5.3 hunts through HTML and text files for text strings and can replace them. Nice for doing big search-and-replace functions on your Web site code. $30 from www.divlocsoft.com/.

AddWeb 2.47 submits your Web site to various search engines for registration. The unregistered version only submits you to major search sites, and you can only use it 10 times. Keep it for $50, try it from www.cyberspacehq.com/.

Advanced HTML Optimizer 3.0 pares the unneeded tags and glop out of your HTML code, reducing page size an average of 20% while leaving the appearance unchanged. (I imagine this is far more useful for those of us who don't hand-write our own code; I'd love to see this turned loose on a FrontPage product, for example.) Also makes it impossible for cyberbanditos to steal your source code. $25 from www.pcbit.com/htmlopt/.

Advanced Scrolling Text 3.1 will enhance the viewing experience of your Web site visitors. It supports text, images and hyperlinks. Plus, you can set colors, fonts, indents, pauses between pages, scroll speed and more. $25 from www.jpowered.com/advscrollingtext/index.htm.

It creates cross-browser navigation bars that work the same way in all browsers that support DHTML, including Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera. $60 from www.likno.com/.

AM-DeadLink 1.0 lets you locate dead URLs quickly and easily. Free from aignes.com/software/index.html.

Anfy 2.0 gives you access to more than 50 applets that can be readily added to your page, including interactive graphics, 3D navigation menus, image-transition effects, and image morphing. Free from anfyteam.com/index.html.

Applet Headline Factory 4.0 is a neat little goodie from the folks at www.coffecup.com/ that lets you build Java-based headlines to run in your Web sites. No knowledge of Java required, and only costs $25.

Applet HScrollMenu Builder 1.0 builds horizontally scrolling message applets (in Java) without requiring any code from you. $25 from www.usingit.com/products/java/applet/ahsmb/index.html.

APrompt 1.0.6 checks your HTML code for accessibility problems that might be experienced by disabled users. Free from aprompt.snow.utoronto.ca/demo.htm.

Apycom Java Menu Applets 3.12 is a collection of lightweight (~5kb each) Java applets that will help you create menus, popups, bars, and buttons. Free from www.apycom.com/apmenu/.

Arachnophilia 4.0 is a free HTML code editor that offers plenty of bells and whistles. (I can vouch for this one, as it came in handy for rewriting some of the links in early versions of these pages.) Get it from www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/.

Arles Image Web Page Creator 4.62 quickly and easily creates image collections on the Web. This program creates high-quality thumbnails, modifies images, and automatically creates HTML pages. $49 from www.digitaldutch.com/arles/.

AscToHTM 3.3 is a $40 utility from www.jafsoft.com/asctohtm/ that transforms standard text to HTML format.

AtomPark HTML Password Protector 1.20 password-protects and encrypts your HTML source code. Don't forget your password, as this is a one-way operation. $30 from www.atompark.com/products/ahpp.htm.

Atrise Everyfind 5.1.1 designs a search engine for your Web site, CD, intranet, or portable documentation. Lots of templates and it doesn't need server-side scripts to work. $70 from www.atrise.com/everyfind/.

Atrise HTMLock 1.10.0 lets you create password-protected HTML pages and hide the source of those pages. $20 for personal use from www.atrise.com/.

AutoSiteGallery 1.6 creates HTML-based photo galleries. $29 from www.brizsoft.com/index.html.

Azure Web Log 1.4 is a site analyzer that tells you what the most popular pages and files are on your site, how many visitors are there and where they are from, among other information. $65 from www.azuredesktop.com/logdoc.html.

Balthaser:fx is a pricey ($199) but powerful alternative to Macromedia's Flash for whomping up snazzy Web effects. Basically, it provides users with a range of "canned" Flash effects for easy application. There are some hitches; you're required to build your Web page on-site (i.e. no cuts-and-pastes to your own extant site), and unless you register the program, you can't save your efforts. The 30-day trial is just that: a trial. Find out more at www.balthaser.com/.

Balthisar Cascade 2.0 beta 12 is intended for the creation of specification 2 Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) for inclusion into HTML documents. Includes most of the features an amateur or professional HTML developer needs to create publishable hypertext documents, and strictly follows the CSS2 specification as set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium. Free from www.balthisar.com/.

Better Ad Blocking for Mozilla and Netscape 7 uses Mozilla and Netscape 7 CSS3 selectors to block ads based on substring matches in the HREF of a link for links containing images. Apparently, it's more reliable to matching the HREF link than the IMG SRC link. The Web page gives instructions for accomplishing this through a newly-created file called USERCONTENT.CSS. Free from www.floppymoose.com/.

BPlainLite 1.1 is a free combination HTML generator and tutorial program. Can't say the Webmaster's grasp of English is the best, but the program is worth a look from www.minostudio.com.

Custo 1.0 is a $19 Web designer goodie from www.netwu.com/ that retrieves information about the structure of Web sites -- your own or another. Explore site resources, download selected files and Web folders, and verify the accessibility of links to other sites. Developers can use this tool to verify the integrity of a Web site under construction and get a tree structure of the overall site before making it live. Users just learning Web development and programming can use it to learn the structure of Web sites worth emulating. It works quickly and doesn't consume your Internet bandwidth or an inordinate amount of hard drive space.

DocFather Professional 3.0 is an extremely powerful, horrendously expensive ($495) program that creates a search and navigation tool for your Web site. The Web site for SFS Software, the makers of DocFather, seems to be extremely coy in letting itself be found; rather than waste your time tracking it down, find it at www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000SZT,.html or another download site.

Doctor HTML 6.1 is a Web-based HTML validator available at www2.imagiware.com/RxHTML/.

Doorway Page Wizard 1.0 is a tool for creating highly optimized, keyword-intensive Web pages, featuring a wizard that guides you through a step-by-step process to create the pages. Dr. Watson 5.02 is a Web-based HTML validator available at watson.addy.com/.

Dreamweaver MX 6.0 is a huge, well-regarded Web design tool that is used by lots of Web professionals. The actual program costs $399 (!), well out of the realm of most shareware, but the 30-day demo is worth checking out, if you don't mind the enormous amount of time used to download the thing. Check it out from www.macromedia.com/. Note: I've learned Dreamweaver as part of my (now-former) day job, and I am totally impressed. It has its quirks and its flaws, but overall, it rocks. If you really want a program that handles everything to do with Web design, try Dreamweaver UltraDev, a $600 program that adds dynamic content and ASP to Dreamweaver's array of functions. Warning: not every user I've run into thinks that UltraDev is worth the extra bucks.

The $70 Hot Dog Page Wizard will be appreciated more by the amateur, but intermediate users can get plenty of mileage out of it as well.
