Atomica, formerly GuruNet, is a free Web-based utility that works whenever you're online to give you reference information, real-time info, and more. All of this comes inside handy little pop-up windows, and the program works inside lots of apps, including browsers, MSOffice, several e-mail clients, etc. Get the skinny from www.atomica.com/.

Backflip is an online bookmark manager and search engine. Now you can access your bookmarks from any computer anywhere. Free from www.backflip.com/.

Beyond.com is, of course, a Web site and not a download, but they now feature a Free Products (after rebates) page at www.beyond.com/departments/free.htm. When I last went on it (mid-July 2000), I found freebies from Attune (PC diagnostic tool, now out of business), ArtToday, SurfMonkey, Rocket Talk, IOLO System Mechanics, a Eudora antispam filter, card games, and yea other goodies.

Blink is a Web-based bookmark utility that comes highly recommended for those of us who need to keep our bookmarks available on the Web. Free at zdnet.blink.com/.

BookmarkBox is another free Web-based method of collecting and managing bookmarks for your use anywhere. Check it out at www.bookmarkbox.com/.

BookmarkSync is free Web-based bookmark utility, offering a bit more privacy by default than some of the others. It syncs bookmarks from IE and Netscape together, though not all that well. Free from www.bookmarksync.com/.

Clickmarks is a free Web-based bookmarking utility for making your bookmarks available on the Net. Scoot over to www.clickmarks.com for the lowdown.

Dialpad.com is a Java/Web utility that actually lets you make free long-distance phone calls from your PC. All you need is Win 9x, a recent version of Netscape or MSIE, an Internet connection, a sound card, and a microphone/speaker. You don't download any software and the guy on the other end doesn't need anything special. Currently you can only dial out (from America; international callers are one jump ahead of us Yanks here) and the sound quality isn't pristine, but hey, it's free. Think Ma Bell and her babes aren't taking notice of this? Dial into www.dialpad.com/ and check this one out ASAP. Want free international PC-based calls? Check out www.hottelephone.com/ and be prepared to deal with some very aggressive ad-based telephony. Net2Phone at www.net2phone.com/english/ is another hot new provider of Internet long distance calls.

EFridge is an online version of the refrigerator calendar found in most homes. Check it out at www.efridge.com/.

Excite Planner is another free online calendar, but a nice one. Free to use at planner.excite.com/.

HotLinks is another Web-based bookmark utility. Need your bookmarks available on the Web? See how it works at www.hotlinks.com/. You can also browse other people's stored bookmark files, including celebrities (ooooh).

Jump is a free online calendar service that does a good job tracking individual and group schedules. Useful for a group of busy workers who can most easily coordinate their work schedules over the Internet. Synchronous with Lotus Notes, Outlook Express, PalmPilot, Windows CE, Sidekick, Schedule+. Drawbacks are slow, bitmap-heavy downloads and the inability of one group member to view another's schedule. Check it out at www.jump.com/.

Mambo.com is a Web site that functions as a personal start page. You can build your own Web page there, but you can also use Mambo to schedule group activities with others, even providing maps and message boards for participants. It's still growing; check it out at www.mambo.com/.

Mr.Wakeup is a free Web-based service that lets you schedule wakeup calls for wherever, whenever, through December 31, 2001. It will even include headlines, a horoscope reading, or a motivational message. You can record a wakeup call in your own voice or type in a message to be read back by the robot voice. The Web site is still in beta and needs polishing, but the service seems to work fine. Try it at www.mr.wakeup.com/.

Whiteboards, insertion of active Web pages, uploaded PowerPoint slides, even active apps are all usable options during your meeting of the minds. If you want to run meetings over the 4-hour limitation, have more than 5 participants, permanently retain slideshows, or record sessions, a pay-as-you-go option is available. Get the lowdown from www.myplaceware.com/. Audio conferencing and FTP provisions aren't available, but whaddya want for free?

MyTime is a free, Lycos-owned personal Web calendar/scheduler that sacrifices fancy features for simple, fuss-free service. No downloads are required; everything resides on Lycos's servers. Still in beta as I write this, it may be too scanty for your purposes, but you can see for yourself at www.MyTime.com/.

Netcraft is a free Web-based utility that tells you what server is powering a particular Web site. I found out that the old members.aol.com/ version of this site is powered by NaviServer/2.0 AOLserver/2.3.3 on Solaris, while the toejumper.ibd.net/ version used to run on Apache/1.3.3.Cobalt (UNIX) (RedHat/Linux) PHP/3.0.7. Don't care? Don't visit www.netcraft.com/.

Postage4Free is a Web-based goodie that offers you 10 postage-paid envelopes in return for your responses to a marketing survey. To get more after a couple of months, verify that your survey responses are accurate. The envelopes come with ads pre-printed on them, but the bill collectors won't care. Look it over and decide if it's worth it at www.postage4free.com/.

ScheduleOnline is a free online scheduler created with business groups in mind. Group members can make and change scheduled events, check out each other's schedules, etc. The program automatically e-mails group members to inform them of schedule conflicts and changes. Simple, elegant, and quite functional. Look it over at www.scheduleonline.com/.

Still in beta as I type this, users can send e-mail to each other through Visto, works with other programs such as Outlook (a free downloadable plug-in enables Visto to work with Outlook 98, ACT!, and Lotus Organizer), and provides users with 15MB of storage space. Not a bad deal. Slide over to www.visto.com/ for more info.

When.com is a free Web-based personal scheduler designed for social, not business, users. An excellent way for us disorganized types to remind ourselves about upcoming movies, purchases you intend to make, TV shows you want to tape, letters you mean to write, and so forth. Look it over at www.when.com/. (AOL users, When should be available through them, since AOL has bought When.com out, but non-AOL users should still be able to use it.)

Yahoo! Calendar is less functional than other Web-based scheduling and calendar sites listed above, but it does synchronize with several commercial PIMs such as Outlook, Palm Desktop, and REX Pro, and the Small Business Connected Office facility, currently in development, seems promising. Check it all out for free at calendar.yahoo.com/.
